Solar Lights for Egg production!

The chickens are molting right now, which is pretty late–seems like ours usually molt in August or September—so we’re getting no eggs at all from them. The ducks also had completely stopped laying, though they weren’t molting.  On our trip to Florida in September, my mom gave me a bunch of those little solar garden lights, the kind you push into the ground along paths and walkways. A couple of weeks ago I put them in the greenhouse where the ducks spend the night, and two days later we got three eggs. We’ve averaged two eggs a day ever since! I’m going to look around for a brighter light—but it still has to be solar, since there’s no power up there at the greenhouse—and one for the chickens, too. I would really like eggs this winter!

Mountain Rose Potatoes

We LOVE this variety! They’re bright red on the inside, too, and have a great flavor and a fluffy texture. They’re produced on the prettiest potato plant I’ve ever seen, too. We’ll definitely grow these again next year. More potato updates to come…

Look Who Showed Up

Because we are now crazy dog hoarders, dogs just show up here now. This guy came a couple of nights ago—we’re posting flyers in the few random places we can think to post them, and he’s very visible from the road here, so he’s probably temporary.

In other dog news, I think we may have a home for Lola! I’ll know more this weekend.

Pretty Maeby

Maeby looks so pretty right now, and I feel confident that she’s bred. I do love a fat, pregnant Jersey cow!

November: Witch Hazel

Happy November! The witch hazel is blooming, and the leaves here are about at their peak of color. It’s gorgeous, but a little melancholy.
