It was 10° this morning, and in the house it was a bone-chilling 40°. The plan was to have our new Jotul heat stove in before cold weather, but the best laid plans, yada yada yada. So I think this may be the day it comes in the house. It won’t be hooked up, but the process will have begun.
For some reason we haven’t brought down from the barn loft the electric heater that we usually use in the worst of the winter weather, which explains the temperature in the house this morning—the cookstove just can’t quite do it in the coldest weather. It’s not supposed to get above freezing until late this week, right before a repeat of this weekend’s weather.
When ED went out to the barn for chores this morning, I chanted under my breath the whole time she was gone,”Please no new baby calf today. Please no new baby calf today.” Though what difference it makes I’m not sure—the calf is due next Saturday, and the forecast temps are exactly the same as today!
Looks like we’re really going to have winter this year!

10 degrees, what tropical luxury! It was 6 on our front porch. We always do some catching up on winterization when it gets like this. Your heater reminds me of that masonry flue that starts in our basement and ends in the attic just inches from going through the roof.
Yep—we like to think of Shelton Laurel as the banana belt!
Hey RM. Yeah, it’s winter alright. I don’t know quite how I feel about that. Last year living in the camper I didn’t get cold- I think being indoor/ outdoor it kept me burly and adapted. But this year, whether it’s because I’m all indoors and soft or because it’s cold as nuts, I’m COLD! I hate the thought of you people sitting in a 40 degree house. Bust out those space heaters, lady!
I think it’s colder this year, Dana. I wasn’t any tougher last winter, and I’m SO MUCH colder this year! We’ve got the heaters going—I just want my woodstove!!
Is that frost on the inside? Several windows in the coldest corners of our house were frosty inside. That just ain’t right.
It’s between the window and the storm window. I’m feeling pretty thankful for the storm windows this winter!
