Birthday Moon

Today is the full Rose Moon, and my birthday—it’s like two for the price of one! I’ve always thought that the numbers of my birthday were the very best—6/18/65—they just work so nicely together. Imagine my shock as an adult, when I realized that pretty much everybody feels that way about their own birthday!

Still on baby watch with MH, who may be getting a little tired of being watched.

Drought, Puppies and Pregnant Ladies

The worst of the heat wave has subsided, but the drought is intensifying. Once again our county is in the red D3 zone. The thought of another summer like last year is a little depressing. Our neighbor’s spring is already failing. I can easily spend two hours a day watering, but I’m not sure how long our spring will hold up for that.

The puppies are huge, fat, lumbering creatures. Poor Liath is so skinny! I think all but two are (at least tentatively) spoken for; they’ll be ready to go 5 July.

Had lunch with MH yesterday—we spent two hours hanging out in the AC at our neighbors’ ice cream/sandwich shop in Hot Springs. It was lovely. MH is so big and beautiful right now, and so ready to have this baby! Any minute now…

Surreal

The last several days have been scorching, running in the 90′s every day, which is hotter than our average temperature any time of the year, including July and August. Everything is such an effort in the heat, and by the end of the day at suppertime, we’re all snarling evilly at each other.

The backdrop to the glaring sun and blistering heat is the bizarre sound of the 17 year cicadas, which sound like aliens landing to take over our brains. Or maybe like car alarms.

The combination is weirdly stupefying.

Thank goodness for homemade peppermint ice cream.
