Last night DH picked a bunch of young poke shoots from out by the barn. We put them through two changes of water—brought them to a boil, drained them, added cold water, brought them to a boil again, drained them again—and then sauteed them with our neighbor’s bacon and a handful of ramps, and served them drizzled with some homemade vinegar(from a batch of locust flower honey mead that didn’t quite work out a few years ago). What a delicious meal! We eat poke a few times every spring—it’s so welcome and green.

We’ve also been eating salads from the garden, though it’s been so dry the lettuce is growing pretty slowly. I water, but it’s just not the same.

Yesterday I tried making a batch of cornbread using my bread starter and it turned out quite well. Different, but really good. I will be experimenting further.

Is she the cutest thing? Doesn’t she look like her daddy?

The girls have been hunting (and finding) morels the last couple of days. Bernard found her first yesterday, and suddenly understood what all the fuss is about. Last week, just before finding the first of the season, ED had her first morel dream of the year (she dreams of finding eggs and morels), and Bernard had her first morel dream ever last night! Tonight for supper we are having homemade goat cheese ravioli with morel butter.

DH, Bernard, and a friend from across the street picked dandelion flowers yesterday, enough for five gallons of wine, so I have a vat of dandelions soaking on the stove.

The current jack-style cow cheese was dry enough to be buttered this morning, so it got a good massage with homemade butter. It’s beautiful—much yellower than the last two. Also, in other cheese news, I have a pot of raw milk goat cheese ready to be dipped out today. It’s been inoculated with penicillium mold, so it’ll grow a velvety coating of white mold like a brie or camembert, and will be lovely to eat with sourdough bread.

Two rams and a ewe so far, which is perfect for us, as we keep sheep more for meat than anything else. And the ewe is the little black lambie in the picture, just standing up for her first time! It will be nice to have a non-white ewe!

DH built a small greenhouse this year; this picture is before the plastic was on, which it is now, but with the rainbow, of course I had to use it.

Today is supposed to be very rainy and kind of cool, so I’m planning to spend some time out there potting up my tomatoes, eggplants, peppers, and leeks, and starting lots of new stuff.

Today was supposed to be cloudy, rainy, and mid-60s. Instead it’s brightly sunny and almost 80°! I have no complaints except that I had already planned a kitchen day, so now I’m rushing to get it all done so I can go outside. Bread and butter were the first things on the agenda. The bread is a cool-rise leaven bread—a sourdough, though not real sour—so I started it last night. I’ve been making butter with cultured cream, using a culture called fil mjolk, which I love, so my cream had been sitting out on the counter since yesterday afternoon, which made the butter come amazingly fast. And although I’ve included a picture of my jack-style cow’s milk cheese, which is aging in my kitchen right now, what I am actually working on is a batch of cow’s milk cottage cheese, and the first chevre of the season. I want to go out and play!
