We leave for the beach Saturday morning, and as usual, it’s insane trying to get everything done before we can leave! It’s so hard to leave the farm, leaving the animals in somebody else’s hands. This year, a friend from town will be staying here, and I feel really great about it, as he seems very conscientious, and has had animals before. It’s still hard, though…
When we get back, it’ll be just about breeding season, which is always kind of exciting. We’re pretty stoked about this year’s buck, and we’re breeding nine does (well, two of them I’m still iffy about—they were born this past January, and I’m thinking they might be ready by December. I’ll have to wait and see if we think they’re big enough).
In other goat news, we returned Tallulah, our herd matriarch, to the lovely lady from whom we bought her eight years ago. She’s going on ten years old, and was so high maintenance that I didn’t think I could handle the stress of breeding her again. We all miss her—Bernard was three when we bought her, and didn’t remember life before Tallulah! She has returned to a wonderful home, and we have a herd full of her daughters and granddaughters.
Also, the last weekend of this month, we’re butchering the pigs, and on the thirtieth we’re having a pig picking/fall festival/party. If you’re in the neighborhood, come by! There’s going to be a cakewalk, and games, and hopefully some good local music. It promises to be great fun.
