Chris Owen, of Spinning Spider Creamery is at it again! As if veiled threats and generally unethical behavior weren’t enough, please read this recent email:
>>>Heads up, everyone! The headline could just as easily read Buncombe County. This is one of my worst fears as a cheesemaker. Mistrust of local fresh cheese could just as easily translate to fear of food that doesn’t come from a “safe” place like your local grocery store.
I’d like to propose we all approach our market managers to make sure all paperwork is in place regarding licensing and health inspections of vendors. Being new to the group, I’m wondering if the mtma has any say in how individual markets handle vendors that need special licensing or inspections. Do we suggest, require, or simply leave it up to the discretion of the individual market? If it hasn’t been addressed before, now may be a good time.

I feel that this may not be coming from Chris’s concern for her fellow humans. Please remember, this woman was selling cheese made in her uncertified kitchen last year! But I guess she’s seen the light since becoming certified. Also, I only know of three cheesemakers in the Asheville area besides Spinning Spider. All three are uncertified, all three make very good cheese and no one has had any problems eating these cheeses. All are pasteurizing the milk used to make these cheeses, and practicing good sanitation.
Perhaps she should consider putting less energy into protecting her investment, and more energy into learning to make good cheese? Just a thought…
Here is a link to the original article that Chris is referring to in her e-mail:

Chris has the entire market wrapped up for selling local goat cheese in Asheville. What more does she want?
